My Brother Sam Is Dead, Novel by James Lincoln Collier

The story ends when surface-to-air missile, on atomic number 53 of his return visits with his company, is arrested and executed for stealing cattle.

One of the main themes in this novel is that big historical events are made up of small battles and personal stories. The confine begins with an arguwork forcet among Sam and Life ab show up the reasons to fight. Sam tells him that he has become a soldier in order to be free, and his father answers, " acquit? Free to do what, Sam? Free to mock your male monarch? To shoot your neighbor? To make a mess of thousands of lives?" (Collier 7). The Colliers charge that the big war is echtly the little differences between people, between Sam, who feels the need for freedom, and Life, who does not feel restricted by be a British subject.

Another example of the theme occurs when Tim finds out what happened to his father. He knows Life was ambushed by thieves when he rode ahead to examine out the road home; Tim could see the tracks in the cytosine and guess what had happened. However, he does not discover his father's ultimate tidy sum until months later, when he hears that Life somehow ended up on a British prison ship (even though he was captured by rebels) and died of cholera. Although he had not yet decided whose look he was really on, now "it seemed to me that everybody was to blame, and I decided that I wasn't going to be on anybody's side any to a greater extent: neither genius of them was right"

A trinity example of the theme is the way the book ends, with Sam's execution. As far as Tim is concerned, the war is now over, though he acknowledges that it went on for three more years after that. He never joined either one of the armies, so the war just was not important to him. He localize down the story so that "perhaps . .. somebody provide read this and see what the cost has been" (Collier 211). For him, the cost was his father and brother.

(Collier 167). numerous other people probably felt the same way, though for different reasons, which is why the war took so long to finish, but, in this book, Tim's story is more important than the bigger story.

A third example is from the chapter "How to Write a True War Story.

" He says, "In a true war story, if there's a honourable at all, it's like the thread that makes the cloth. You can't tease it out. You can't extract the subject matter without unraveling the deeper meaning. And in the end, really, there's nothing much to say about a true war story, except maybe 'Oh'" (O'Brien 84).
