People Starving in Ethiopia

Although little has been reported nigh the matter, quite a little are starving in the Sahel at this time also.

In late1985 and early1986, the attention of the gentleman's gentleman was drawn to the pathetic spectacle of millions of populate starving in Ethiopia. The emplacement was presented in great detail on television screens well-nigh the world on a daily basis. Rock and riffle concerts were organized in various countries to raise funds to process the hungry in Ethiopia. Mother Theresa was trotted onto the world stage to transfigure that hunger was caused by the forces of evil, and the Reagan Administration identified the forces of evil as Marxist devils, proclaiming that hunger in Ethiopia was the fault of the socialist policy-making and economic policies of that country's leftist government.

The intent of some of these efforts was laud subject; of otherspathetic; of moreover otherslaughable; and of somedown right sinister. nowhere were the governments of the horse opera industrialized countries found offering the massive amounts of aid compulsory to preclude massive starvation. Colonial intervenors, however, believed that what they viewed as intolerable conditions in the Sahel could be changed. Under colonialism, they attempted to force and otherwise persuade the nomadic people to settle. One result of this action, where it was successful, was to make the people of the region more dependent than ever on certain rainfall, because they lost their flexibility to move with the changing conditions. Unfortunately, the intervenors forgot to force nature to provide the predictable rainfall.

Throughout all of the concern explicit over the hunger in Ethiopia, little, if any, mention was made of the position that hunger exists on a massive scale in piles of developing countries throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin Americanot just Ethiopia. Throughout the appeals for individual donations to Ethiopia, certainly, no mention was made of starvation in the Sahel.
