At the age of thirteen, Styne played in a pit bent for a burlesque press out, without his parents knowledge. Styne and Cahn had their first Broadway smash hit with High Button Shoes in 1947, starring Nanette Fabray and Phil Silvers. The show ran for 727 performances and won the Donaldson award. (The Donaldson awards were established in 1944 to honor the creator of Billboard, W.H Donaldson).
