Martha Graham took to heart her fathers maxim of the body never lies, and would base her future bounds on expressing her own feelings through the movements of the body. However, few would have guessed then that when Martha Graham grew up she would eventually revolutionize dance, and help create the innovational forms and expressions of Modernism. In this essay, I intend to show how Martha Grahams use of expressionistic values, female protagonist, surrealism, and other techniques in her dance Lamentation, helped to change traditional values of dance, and would later become sort of a new Modernistic dance.




What has been termed as the Modern Period, or the time between 1898 to roughly 1950, was a time characterized by a rejection of prescience ideology, focus on individuality, mechanization, and an interest in both art and dance on the peripheral. The reasons behind societies suspect of Enlightenment ideals is both varied and complex. For one, the world had just begun to encounter from the horror of a second world war, where millions of soldiers and civilians had died. Such unaffixed destruction and death led to a disillusioned ordination who questioned how a logical world, such as the one the Enlightenment advocated, could have allowed such atrocities.
