Smothering in the Quilt that is the States
America by Tony Hoagland is a poem about a teachers discovery about the materialism and the suffocative self-indulgence of the Ameri bunghole people and even of himself from a sort of unlikely disciple. The speaker, relish, narrative, metaphor, and argument greatly contri excepted to the mental transformation the vote counter undergoes. For example in the line I remembered when I stabbed my baffle in the dream last night, it was not blood but money that gushed out of him(Line 15) Hoagland displays his change of perspective from being on the whole unaware of his overwhelming consumerism to that of someone that is just noticing the materialism that overtakes him daily. The poems endpoint line and yet it seems to be your testify hand which turns the tawdriness higher?(Line 36) shows the narrators final realization that it is simply by our own error that we are smothered by our culture.
The speaker of this poem begins as a somewhat distrustful teacher.
One day one of his students claims that America is for him a uttermost security prison/whose wall are made of Radioshacks and B counselr Kings, and MTV episodes/where you cant tell the show from the commercials(Lines 2-4), Refusing to initially listen to his students opinions and prepared to disprove him before hes even finished, the teacher then realizes that his student has a point. He then begins to think over all the events in his own life that have contributed to this theory. In his own dream the night before he even realized that he had an urge to free his father from his constraints of materialism. The speaker then realizes his own tang of oppression from Americas mall-like society and changes from an attitude of unconscious mind material-based living to a feeling of being consumed by it.
