The attack was originally known as the Ardennes Offensive, only because the initial attack of the German forces created a bulge in the front line of the Allies, it has become commonly known as the Battle of the Bulge (The Battle). Fought on an 80-mile front line running from southern Belgium through the Ardennes Forest, and then down to Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, the Germans tried to father the Allies off guard with a surprise attack to attempt to divide the British and American forces. Doing this would leave a path open for the Wehrmacht, or German army to go north and take conrol of the port of Antwerp.
