June 20, 1837 born in the small township of Boxford, Massachusetts, Atherton was born. At the age of 12 his father dies and to keep the family rill he works at a farm and like mill to pay his way through Philips Exeter, an elite tall school. Graduating from Philips Exeter, he enrolls in Yale but, living at the time of the courtly War he helps the Union and is promoted to a captain. He is currently relieved of his duty because of health problems.
When he becomes older he attends Yale and graduates in 1863 with a teaching degree. His first real affair out of college was a teaching career at The capital of New York Academy in Albany, New York and so went to St. Johns College in Maryland. Soon after he became a efficacy member at the University of Illinois then went to Rutgers to become a policy-making science professor.
While in New Jersey he takes up a law degree and runs for Congress, but he fails. He is initiated into the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at Rutgers. After Rutgers he then accepts tenure for twenty- four years at Penn State Universitys presidency.
At Penn State one of his main challenges was to win sustainment for getting its land-grant. Chances of this goal being achieved was growing as presently as he got into power but they were still not high.
