Insights into the neurobiology of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia

Comment: Hyperactivity of a corticostriatal circuit involved in generating speech might be secondary to the experience of repeated hallucinations. However, fluctuations of brain activity in association with frequent hallucinations and similar degrees of energizing in frequently and less-frequently hallucinating patients suggest that a sheath of intragroup speech generates auditory hallucinations of voices. In nonhallucinating patients, partial gulf of frontotemporal and frontostriatal circuits that generate speech may block the conversion of internal speech to hallucinations. The intensity of activity in these systems might rival how hallucinated thoughts are converted to someone elses voice and contain core that patients do not identify as their own.
