Two conclusions can be immediately drawn; either Arnold is a painless jester attempting to hit on an attractive girl, or he is a menacing man with oft darker motives. He has neer met Connie before in his life, yet by calling her baby, he addresses her as if they are in a approximate and personal relationship. More disturbing than calling a grapple stranger an affectionate name, is the threat that Arnold insinuates. He doesnt elaborate much on this, only saying he is going to get Connie.
Without further explanation, this lets the reader interpret if his meaning is physical or emotional. Getting her emotionally could mean that hes fire in making her fall in love with him, opus getting her physically would involve stealing her innocence, or literally taking her from her home.
This double meaning found from such a short phrase leads the reader to believe that behind his obviously normal locution, there is always a darker meaning. This is displayed again when Arnold is invoke with Connie to come and take a harmless drive with him. He says, Yes, Im your lover. You dont know what that is but you will, he said. I know that too.
